Before the humans and orcs came to prominence, the land now ruled by the Empire of Altan was mostly forested. In this time, the known world was ruled by elves. However, after their defeat by the men from the Isle of Berserkers, most of the elves retreated to seclusion on Emerald Peak or took to nomadic life. The latter have dwindled along with the harvested trees, with the only major population center in the uncontested Empire consisting of those who act as wardens in the Jade Crown around Lindberg. However, elves are capricious beings, and they wander throughout the world, alone, in tribes, and with other races.
Elves and drow have been considered a prouder possibility for dragon-kin than kobolds, thanks to their majestic grace, their affinity for arcane magic, and their resistance to sleep powers. However, they have also been linked to chaotic divinity, thanks to their outlook and their nature being more mutable than would be expected of a race with such long generations, recognizable in their tendency to change in pigmentation to match their surroundings. Elves’ homelands can often be identified from their complexion: those of the Empire tend toward light-green hair and tan skin, while the residents of Emerald Peak are generally darker in both respects. However, this is not completely consistent, and there are numerous other possibilities. It is thought that over the long term this adaptability may have allowed the drow to adjust to life in Chthonia.
